Julia Child Brickography

Read about what we are doing here!

Cooking is a big passion in our family. Skip and I love good food and we love making it in our home. From the earliest moments of each boy’s life they have logged a ton of hours either in the crook of Skip’s arm while he is cooking or standing next to one of us cracking eggs, whisking, or just watchin-and-talkin.

So, in preparation for this Brickography, our hours and hours of cooking together gave us a jumpstart towards learning about Julia Child. We don’t watch much T.V. but I think our first family show we all enjoyed together was The Great British Baking Show. We found cooking shows to be a great (and enjoyable!) resource for all ages. One of the first things the kids did when we arrived in England, was to find a book of baking recipes and create whatever they could in our tiny kitchen. In preparation for our year in France, we extended our cooking show fascination to old episodes of The French Chef. Our kids immediately fell in love with the funny, enthusiastic character of Julia Child and she easily became a daily reference and our fictional companion as we began a year of navigating French markets and French dinners.

Being placed in Aix-en-Provence has been pivotal to our boys truly understanding what Julia meant by “fresh ingredients.” We have been lucky enough to walk and talk them through buying our dinner ingredients every week and I feel confident that, even when we are not walking through the market here, they will have a good understanding of what it is to “shop-to-eat.” And hopefully they will be able to discern good ingredients, pick out a good tomato, etc. Most of all I hope they will be able enjoy the pleasure of turning whatever is on hand and in season into something nourishing and delicious.
