For this assignment, we all visited a little house in Beaconsfield England (about 25 miles west of London) where Robert Frost lived with his family for two years (1912-1914).
What’s fascinating about this relatively plain looking little house is that when R. Frost and his family moved into it in 1912, he was a relatively unknown poet. When they left this house in 1914, he was a published poet of international renown, and had published his first two books (the second of which included some of his most famous poems).
Though there is not much more than a small blue plaque in the brick wall facing the street on Reynolds road (it’s not really on google maps, but we can help you find it if you are trying) some of the greatest 20th-century American poetry was written inside of this little house.
With this assignment for the boys, we began reading the collection You Come Too: Favorite Poems for Readers of All Ages. One of these poems called “The Pasture” is what Lazarus recites at the begnining of the video. At the end of the video, we have a recording of Frost himself reading it. For us, this book has been a great source of poetry to teach kids the nuances of being in the woods, watching wildlife and the inherited silence which comes with both.
